Ductless Heating

Central HVAC uses one large unit pushing conditioned air through ducts to every room. Ductless mini-splits use a single outdoor compressor connected to one or more indoor air handlers, each controlling its own zone — no ducts. Mini-splits are 20–30% more efficient (no duct losses), allow per-room temperature control, and install in homes without existing ductwork. Central HVAC is usually cheaper per square foot for whole-house coverage in homes that already have ducts.

Most residential systems support 2–8 zones from a single outdoor unit. A typical Utah home configuration: 1 zone per bedroom (2–3 zones), 1 for the main living area, 1 for a finished basement. We size the outdoor unit to handle simultaneous load across all zones — undersizing means the system can't keep up on the coldest or hottest days.

Modern cold-climate mini-splits (Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Daikin Aurora, LG LGRED°) maintain rated capacity down to -13°F and continue heating below -22°F — well past anything Salt Lake Valley sees in winter. They're significantly more efficient than electric baseboard or resistance heat for the same comfort level. For homes with existing gas furnaces, ductless is a great supplement for basement additions or hard-to-heat rooms.
